Tourism helped by sun and cricket Nelson has enjoyed its second-best tourist year on record and the news is expected to get even better once data around tourist numbers in Nelson for the Cricket World Cup are released. Nelson and Tasman had more than 1.25 million “guest nights” in 2014, meaning one night stayed by each tourist in the region. That’s a jump of five per cent from international visitors alone, compared to

the year before. Those extra people have helped fuel spending as well, with Nelson once again topping the country’s spending growth through eftpos provider, Paymark. Last week Paymark announced a 10 per cent increase for Nelson for the month of February, the highest in the country. Much of that growth has been put down to tourists with the accommodation and hospitality sectors seeing the biggest jump.

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive, Lynda Keene, says a sunny summer and the world cup have both had a part to play in the good figures. “We won’t have January and February

commercial accommodation figures until mid-April but certainly the year-end guest nights 31 December 2014, show the season kicked off really well. I do anticipate the January and February figures to show growth compared to previous year.” She says the return of visitors from “traditional markets” like UK, Germany, USA

Boat show still a wet success Father and son, John and Simon Booth in their sail boat, Polar Express, at the 16th New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend. Photo: Jessie Johnston. The sixteenth New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show may have been treated to a shower only the ducks could appreciate, but it didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of those who attended. The two day event attracted around 120 classic and antique boats to the alpine venue at Lake Rotoiti where, if plans had not been disrupted, a schedule of races would have entertained a crowd of boating enthusiasts. However, Saturday’s downpour

Jessie Johnston Reporter

made it difficult to distinguish lake from shore and in the morning the majority of boat owners and public spectators could be found huddled in either the food or registration tents. Thankfully, the weather came right later on in the afternoon and boat owners who couldn’t restrain themselves any longer were finally able to take to the lake.

“When you’re doing a show like this up in an alpine environment you sort of have to go with the flow really, there’s not much we can do about it,” says organiser Pete Rainey. “It is a shame, but despite the weather we’re still really impressed that so many people have come out, not only boat owners but people coming along to see what’s going on.” ‘Summertime’, owned and built by Rosie Lees of Blenheim, took out the Jens Hansen Cup for the Best Vessel Overall.

Flight a rough ride for passengers Passengers on an Air New Zealand flight were screaming and throwing up as they flew into Nelson on Friday. Flight NZ5270 hit severe turbulence while flying from Christchurch. Half way through the flight, passengers

on board were warned by the pilot to expect turbulence due to storm conditions and that he would try his best to land the plane in Nelson, however may need to divert the flight back to Christchurch. The plane then experienced

violent shuddering and shaking for around 20 minutes, with many passengers screaming and several needing to use more than one sick bag. Passengers clapped and cheered in relief when the plane eventually landed.

Woodburner talks begin Residents will have a chance to give their views on how woodburners should be managed in Nelson, when a review of the air quality plan starts this month. Nelson City Council will host a meeting on Monday, March 16, at Trafalgar Pavilion, to discuss the Nelson Air Quality Plan and how to best manage woodburners. The meeting is part of the first step in

the engagement process with ratepayers. The aim of the review is to find a fair and reasonable solution to keeping people warm in their homes while still meeting the National Environmental Standard for Air Quality, which is set by the government. From 3 to 5pm, a drop-in session will be held where people can talk to staff and experts on anything related to air

quality in Nelson, such as rules and legislation, the status of Nelson’s air or new technology. Then, from 5 to 6.30pm, there will be a talk from staff and a facilitated discussion where people will be encouraged to put forward ideas and suggestions on options to be considered as part of the plan review. Suggestion forms will also be available on the day.

Video cameras will soon watch over Victory Square, after residents identified the area as the place they felt “least safe”. The cameras are part of a joint initiative between the Victory Community Centre, Nelson City Council and the Canterbury Community Trust. Around $10,000 was needed to install the cameras and operate them for three years. The cost was split between the council and community trust, with Nelson police to monitor the cameras. Residents in the area prompted the move, after telling a survey run by the Victory Community Centre that Victory Square was the place they felt the least safe. Survey respondents felt that the presence of CCTV would make them feel safer to know some-

When 11 year old Daniel Edmonds finished painting his trolley, he stood back and admired his handy work. Over his shoulder, his father Rob was admiring his own work. After all, the Mike Pero Nelson Trolley Derby is just as much about the dads as it is the kids. “The competition amongst dads is fierce,” says Rob. “You want to build the best trolley for your kids and there’s always a little joke at the finish line amongst the dads.” This year Rob has been working on three trolleys, one for each of his three children. He says it’s been a great project. “The great thing about the trolley derby is that it’s really a dad thing. Just dad and the kids.” Rob’s eldest son Daniel will be competing for the third time, son Luke, 7, will be taking part for the second time and for five year daughter Lydia, it will be her first trolley derby. Rob, who is the construction manager at Kidson Construction, says two of the trolleys have been modified and one he SP built from scratch, with the help of some friends. “The engineers at work helped me out and a friend, Pete Chapman, did all the steering for us, so that certainly helped.” StovesPlus All of the parts were recycled apart from Refurbished stoves at the wheels. The community has requested this and we are happy to play our part.” A Keep Victory Safe spokesperson, Gayle Petch, says the organisation is delighted to hear of the funding. “This shows that the voice of the Victory community is being heard,” she says. “It will make many who use the park feel safer knowing that unacceptable behaviour is being closely monitored and that’s a win-win for everyone.” NCC says it will now work with the building owner and service provider to have the cameras installed.

Former miners strike 'white gold' with water business A couple of former West Coast miners have struck "white gold" with their premium bottled water, with even the Prime Minister giving it his seal of approval, at the company’s official opening last Friday. The E’Stel Premium Artesian Water plant has been established by brothersin-law Andrew Strang and Wayne Herring, who were both made redundant from Solid Energy’s Stockton Mine last year. Second cousin Steve Diskin is also a founding director. “We wanted to do it for years but it required a large outlay and start-up,’’ Andrew says. “Each and every one of us had to be at the right place in our lives.’’ The trio have invested more than $1 million into the business and have a contract to supply up to 1000 containers a year into China, as well as deals underway with Australia, America and the Middle East. The last six months have been a whirlwind of activity getting all the manufacturing capability and contracts in place. They’ve already exported a couple of trial shipments and have over a million bottles stored ready for bottling to begin nextweek. The plant will initially employ 10-15 staff on the production line but this is expected to grow as the company expands supply. 

Prime Minister John Key officially opened the new water bottling plant in Tahunanui. He said the business was taking advantage of trade deals in China and other parts of the world and he liked the design of the water bottle. “It’s something sexy that people will like the look of.” Nelson MP Nick Smith says the business fits into the region’s already-strong food export market. “This adds to the bow of the fruit and the fish that we are well-known for.” The bottles are all manufactured on-

site, starting out as a little test tube which then gets expanded into the final product. The trio looked at different regions in which to base E’stel but Nelson came up trumps due to their family links in the area, good access to the port and the ability to extract water from a specially drilled 1km deep bore in the Waimea Plains. Meanwhile, their former mining colleagues are watching with interest. “The boys love hearing about it,’’ Andrew says. “This is our white gold.’’

Muddy Buddy is back after battle with council Monique Bergman Despite changes to this year’s Muddy Buddy adventure fun run course, organisers say they are looking forward to a great event with loads of mud. In order to comply with resource consent imposed by Tasman District Council, the school was required to meet a number of regulations. “We have worked really hard with the council to ensure the ecological footprint is negligible, and it is great that the outcome has met everyone’s needs and the fun run will go ahead,” says Tasman School principal, Pip Wells. In order to meet the terms of the consent, the course has been changed slightly from previous years and runners now need to cross Aporo road to get to the estuary, instead of going through a culvert underneath it. The road will be closed briefly for the duration of the race and the school has implemented a traffic management plan to divert traffic around the back of the school so participants can cross the road safely. In addition to this, registration numbers have been restricted to a maximum of 1400 participants. “We strongly recommend people register online now to ensure they are not turning up on the day to be left disappointed that they cannot enter in the fun run,” says Pip. The Muddy Buddy adventure fun run will be held on Sunday, March 15, at Tasman School. It is highly recommended that you register online at www.muddybuddy.co.nz to ensure your entry. If there are any entries left available on the day, registrations will be accepted between 9.30am and 10.30am. The cost is $10 per person or $35 per family for online registrations, and $15 per person or $45 per family if entering on the day.

Tea by the Sea raises cash for school

It was touch and go for Clifton Terrace School’s annual Tea by the Sea fundraiser as the weather threatened to ruin it all. However, everyone pulled together and organisers say it was as successful a night as any Tea by the Sea they’d held before. The fundraising event featured the usual selection of school fair activities from bouncy castles to face painting, an auction and raffles.

Those attending the event were also treated to a surprise when a flash mob took to the field in song. A mother from Clifton Terrace, who is part of The Boatshed Choir, got the group of around 50 together to perform three songs, appearing in smaller groups from different areas around the school field and stunning the crowd. Clifton Terrace’s Tea by the Sea is a zero waste

event, meaning those attending had to bring their own plates, cups and cutlery to enjoy their picnic dinner. Although a total hasn’t yet been calculated, the funds raised will go towards the year five and six camp next year, and this year the school hopes to put some money towards new gymnastics equipment, as well as extending some of its programmes.

Segway tours to close after tough summer Andrew Board

we’ve got your paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds

A sunning summer for tourists and sun hasn’t helped a city tourism operator who is closing down at Easter. Hugh Briggs founded Move Nelson Segway Tours four years ago after ending a career as a town planner. He saw the tours work successfully in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown and thought Nelson would be the perfect place for it. But he says this summer has been his worst he’s had, with many tourists going straight to the Abel Tasman and not spending time in the city. He says the sun has also Hugh Briggs. meant people have preferred to head to the beach and take up options like stand-up paddleboarding instead. “It’s been really tough. Nelson is a great place for Segway tours with our historic sites, shared pathways, rivers and parks, but not enough people did them. People would always say ‘I’ve been meaning to do a tour,’ well, now they only have a month to do it.” Hugh says he will now look for part-time work but is sad that the tours didn’t fly. “It’s always sad and I’m frustrated that it didn’t work, but that’s life. I gave it my best shot and it didn’t work.” He says he may continue to do corporate tours, if requested. If you want to give the tours a go before he closes down after Easter, call Hugh on 0800 386 734 or 027 243 5301.

PM in town: I saw something last Friday that made me proud to be a New Zealander. I was having coffee with a friend in a local cafe in the city and, without any fuss or commotion, our Prime Minister John Key arrived, sat outside and enjoyed a beverage. The first thing that came to mind was, in how many countries could the leader of that country just relax and enjoy a beverage so casually. I don't think people realise we are so blessed to live here. George Barker.

It was pretty exciting driving around Rocks Rd. Big waves crashing right over the road to the cliff, when I went past at 11am. Sue Leov.

Dusty the cricket dog: That is so lovely. Very nice photo too. Heather Waters.

I didn't know it was that bad. As you can tell, I stayed inside. Jannelle Patterson.

Great article!! Sarah Allen.

Opinion

TUESDAY 10 March 2015

Storm causes some flooding: We are in Richmond and our rain gauge is overflowing. Bridget Hobden. It certainly is wild! As a passionate gardener/garden writer/local radio show host, I'm beyond happy about the rain, but I DO feel for the grape growers and anyone who has suffered any damage. May we continue to get regular rainfall, without the wind, from now on! Philippa Foes-Lamb.

What, it's flooded again! Always seems to flood there. Gayl MacLennan. I walked to the Library this morning and nearly took off like Mary Poppins with a wind gust, but loved the rain on my skin. Brenda Kenny.

Friday's closure of Rocks Rd should serve as a reminder to all those in favour of the Southern Link that they need to take off their blindfolds and look at the bigger picture. All the traffic from Tahunanui to Nelson was using Bisley Ave and Princes Drive. These roads are totally unsuitable for that amount of traffic. Add to that the huge increase in traffic pushed through Whakatu Drive from Annesbrook roundabout, and the extra delays caused by that increase, and it is plain to see how vital Rocks Rd is as a State Highway. Simply building a new road for the sake of it is not the way forward.

We need to look at sustainable ways of reducing the number of single occupant cars on our roads, starting with our hopelessly inadequate and expensive public transport. Leave the highway where it is. Ian Millward. In reply to Ian's comment: What I don't understand is why is Waimea Rd not suitable as the primary road for trucks etc? It is wide and pretty straight. The only issue is the way it enters the city. An alternative entry/ exit route via St Vincent St seems logical. The Rocks Rd route should be left as a scenic and local route. It is also a less secure route in extreme weather and not suitable for a main arterial route. We certainly do not need a third route. Doug Newton. Kiwi Regional Airlines on its way: Yay!!! Maria Holden. It's a win-win. New site needed for paintball Monique Bergman

BLack & Decker HanDvac Family-owned and operated Paintball Nelson Appleby, may be forced to shut down its operation if Tasman District Council can’t relocate them to a site within the Waimea River Park. They are, from left, Kenny, Wayne and Heather Stockdale. Photo: Monique Bergman. “I have no hidden agenda with the council at all and I have known about the Waimea River Park for quite some time now, but I feel I am not receiving any assistance from them on a new site within the park for our business,” says Wayne. He says that, because of its central location, the paintball operation is not only used for recreation but by schools and education facilities from around the region too. “When I grew up, Dad took me rabbit shooting and I learned about guns. Where do kids learn those skills these days? Our operation is much more

than just a bit of fun, it is about educating the kids on gun handling and safety too. Last week, I was even approached by a primary school who wanted to recreate a scene from Gallipoli to educate 75 children on what it was like to be in the trenches,” says Wayne. After users of the facility heard about the possible shut down, they created a Facebook page which now has around 693 people opposing its possible closure. TDC communications manager Chris Choat says the council is still working with Wayne to find a solution.

Paintball Nelson Appleby may be forced to shut down if a new site is not allocated to them within the new Waimea River Park development. The Waimea River Park Management Plan was initially developed by Tasman District Council in 2010, and includes management and development of approximately 394 hectares of land alongside the Waimea River. The four-hectare paintball operation at Challies Island has been on the same site for around 26 years, and has been given until February 2016 to move in order to make way for the Waimea River Park wetland restoration project. While owner of Paintball Nelson Appleby, Wayne Stockdale, says he accepts the need for the wetland restoration project, he is increasingly frustrated by the lack of assistance by the council to find an alternative site within the park. This is despite it being noted that the business is to be relocated by the council in their Waimea River Park Management Plan. A meeting was held last Thursday between Wayne and the TDC to discuss a possible relocation site, but they weren’t able to agree.

Central school students get new playground Jacob Chandler The ribbon had barely touched the ground before children from Nelson Central School clambered onto their new playground which opened last Thursday. Landscape architect, Guy Redmond, designed the junior playground as a way to merge play with learning and nature. “This playground seeks to arouse the curiosity, wonder, fun and physical challenges necessary to nurture freedom, self-confidence, and respect for others.” Guy says. Funding for the playground had been secured through the Canterbury Community Trust, the Board of Trustees, and cookbook sales from the Nelson Central School

Community Group. Guy has worked with over 400 schools in the United Kingdon and New Zealand, developing landscapes and playgrounds for over 20 years. He is currently redesigning the Oamaru public gardens. New entrant and year one teacher, Tracy Watkin, says the junior playground has not only met the needs of the younger students. The older students have dedicated time to play on it too. She says the students have been using part of the playground as a pretend shop and puppet theatre. She was surprised at how innovative some of the students had been with their play. “They’ve use it in ways we never thought they would.”

Nelson Central School students get a close look at the school’s new playground, which was officially opened last week. They are from left; Annabelle Barnett, Moss Harvey-Dewar, Kayla GarardGoring, and Oscar Van Dien, all 5. Photo: Jacob Chandler.

Snapper classic postponed until this weekend Heavy rain and wind forced the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic to be postponed over the weekend and, while it created plenty of headaches for organisers, it’s good news for local fishermen. Troy Dando says the decision to hold the competition for a week was made last Thursday due to safety concerns. But he also wanted to make sure the competition is worthwhile for the entrants. “We could see the weather coming and decided it wasn’t worth it. We’ve held it a week and everyone who entered is automatically reentered. But if they can’t make it we will refund their entry money, no problems.” It also means extra teams have until Thursday night to enter. “Some people who couldn’t make the original date will now be able to take part, and that’s great,” he says. So far more than 40 teams of 4 people have entered the tournament. Troy says anyone keen on giving it a go can check out www. tasmanbaysnapperclassic.co.nz for full details. “The snapper are going gang-busters out there, so once we get out it will be a magic day of fishing. We just need the weather to come to the party and we’ll be away.”

Theme needed for masked parade Organisers of the Nelson Arts Festival are asking for public submissions for theme ideas for this year’s Masked Parade. The winning submission will also get the chance to have their group lead the front of the parade and see their theme come to life. Festival's team leader, Axel de Maupeou, says the winning theme will allow for people’s imagination to run wild when creating their masks. “We want people to come up with an idea that will result in a Masked Parade that is full of bold,

colourful and unique masks and costumes that this huge Nelson community event is famous for. Previously themes have varied from sparkling sustainable future to earth, wind and fire. Theme ideas can be submitted online at the council website’s theme competition form, via email festivalenquiries@ncc.govt.nz, via the ‘Nelson Masked Parade and Carnivale’ Facebook page or posted to Nelson Arts Festival, PO Box 645, Nelson 7040. Entries must be received by 5pm March 23.

Regaldo, a cabinet maker with Nalder & Co, Nelson, joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion as a Private during World War One and embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton for Wellington. From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. His father, Joseph Regaldo, Blaketown, Greymouth, is listed as his next of kin on the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database. Regaldo served in Egypt and Gallipoli, and was invalided to New Zealand in June 1915 with a gun shot wound to his right shoulder. Regaldo survived the war and was discharged from the Army on 17 November 1916. He died in Auckland on 29 June 1966 survived by his wife Mrs E. H. Regaldo.

Drinking at the Black Bull Wakapuaka’s first pub, The Black Bull was established in the mid 1840s. It stood on the seaward side of the road just before the turnoff to The Glen and backed on to what was

known as the Wakapuaka Swamp. In 1852 new publican James Spanton held his opening dinner and offered beer at the special take away price of 24 cents a gallon. It’s possible the brew was made from hops grown on the pub’s own land.

As a locally owned and operated business, Wholesale Firewood is committed to providing quality products with a friendly service. Our motto is simple; clean, dry firewood at competitive prices. We have the largest shed storage facility in the Nelson region which helps us maintain a dryer product, even in the middle of winter. We have had so many customers that have rung up disappointed with firewood that was delivered from other suppliers wet. Not only is it poor value for money, but they were left with a wheelbarrow load of rubbish in their driveway once they had stacked it. This year we are selling a variety of wood including gum, pine, beech, kindling and douglas fir. We are proud to sell a variety of quality, clean, dry firewood that won’t disappoint. We are also happy to sell mixed loads, recommending people use a mixture of softwood such as pine, with hardwood to get the best out of their fire. We advise you order your wood early for the upcoming winter to avoid missing out. You can contact Kylie on 546 9595, or 027 922 9611.

Pipe band champs come to Nelson Monique Bergman There will be plenty of colour and sound when the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Championships are held at Trafalgar Park this weekend. It is the third time the annual championships have been held in Nelson since the competition started in 1926. Local band, The Celtic Pipe Band Inc from Stoke, are this year’s organisers. President Bryce Gilchrist says the committee of eight have worked consistently for two years to organise the large event. There will be 45 Pipe Bands and 1300 players competing in the

championships from all over New Zealand. The bands will be coming from as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Invercargill, and there will also be three bands competing from Australia. Not only is Bryce involved in the organisation of the championships, he will also compete on the day with the Nelson Celtic Pipe Band. Being involved in the Nationals is a family affair with his wife Helen, secretary and drum corporal and custodian of the band and liaison officer of the organising committee, and their four children, playing in the band alongside him. There are six pipe bands from the top

of the south and three competing in the championship. The Celtic Pipe Band and the City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band will compete in grade three, so there will be healthy competition between these two local bands. The Celtic Pipe Band Development Band will also compete in their first ever full competition. In addition to the performances at Trafalgar Park, Nelson will be treated to a spectacular march through the streets of Nelson on Saturday. All 45 bands will compete in this march which will start at 9am from Millers Acre, turning into Trafalgar St and ending outside Subway on Bridge St.

Stormy weather on Friday caused disruption to some motorists. Rocks Rd was closed off for a couple of hours as waves crashed over the side, and other areas, such as Vanguard St (pictured), were flooded. Those travelling along Atawhai Drive were redirected as the rear blade of the Founders windmill spun out of control, creating concern it might fly off onto the road.

The Harbour Master’s

diary

On Thursday night, I was privileged to witness a courageous community participating in a Water Safety programme put together by Swim Magic of the ASB Aquatic Centre, sponsored by Swim Magic, the Victory Community Centre and Red Cross. It was awesome to see both young and elders participating in training. How to wear a lifejacket, how to remain warm in the water, float, “huddle” together, retrieve someone, what to do when your boat capsizes or fills up with water and how to tread water. Many of the participants, if not most, had never been in the water before, so to prepare themselves for our aquatic environment is very insightful. If you have a group or community you believe would benefit from well-delivered basic training, contact Lisa at SwimMagic@ASB Aquatic Centre . My congratulations to all those who participated on Thursday and I look forward to seeing you on the water or on the beach. The weekend of the 8th March has seen many boating functions disrupted and I wish to thanks all those responsible organisers that chose not to encourage most of us to put our lives at risk. Some programs have been postponed or cancelled and I think that very wise. For those of you that miss out, I hope you give the organisers a thank you and some understanding. By the time this is in print I will know if there has been any stupidity in the threatening weather and look forward to the opportunity to publish it. Boat safely, have fun. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Former Tour de France rider Nathan Dahlberg is used to cycling up high mountains, but even the tour's legendary ascents up L'Alpe d'Huez and Le Mont Ventoux will seem like molehills compared to the next mountain he plans to climb. The Nelson-based cyclist, who rode in the Tour de France in 1988 and 1989, is aiming to set a new world record by riding a bike on top of the 8051 metre Broad Peak in Pakistan. Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world and if Nathan is successful he will break the present record of biking on the 7564m Muztaga Ata in China. Nathan says he decided to attempt to ride a bike on an 8000m mountain to attract sponsors and "put a mark on the map". He will attempt the record with Slovakian climber Zdeno Brnoliak, supported by a team of three other climbers. "A couple of guys going off to climb an 8000m peak by a standard route is no big deal. Taking a bike up there and riding it, well it's kind of crazy but also kind of interesting and something one can write home about." Nathan says he selected Broad Peak because he has a long association with Pakistan and the ascent is not too technical. "I've been to Pakistan nine times, most recently in 2014 when I cycled up the Karakorum Highway, stopping to hike and climb up over 5000m a number of times on the way.

Nelson's Nathan Dahlberg will attempt to set a new world record for the highest bike ride. "And the standard route up Broad Peak is not a technically demanding one, although it is consistently very steep. Most failures on the mountain are due to exhaustion and altitude." Nathan says they will still need to take a specially-adapted light-weight bike that will weigh less than three kilograms. "The bike we are proposing couldn’t be any standard bike for a number of reasons. Most importantly we would have to carry it at high altitude on very steep slopes so weight has to be eliminated. "It also has to be easy to manage and able to operate in extreme cold. It will only be ridden at the top or however far we manage to get, hopefully above 7700m to set a record." Nathan says they are planning to fly to Pakistan on July 20 before riding to Askole which is the gateway to the Baltoro and Broad Peak in the Karakorums in June. More about the attempt is at www.nathandahlberg.com

Kids 'tryathlon' was biggest yet

A new event record was set for the Nelson Sanitarium WeetBix Kids TRYathlon held last weekend with over 1800 kids, aged between seven and 15 years, taking part in the largestever children’s event in Nelson. After last week’s heavy rain, the skies cleared for perfect racing conditions at Tahunanui as kids lined up on the beach in readiness for their sprint into the sea. Parents, grandparents and friends cheered on children of all fitness levels as they participated in a 50 to 200 me-

World Champion and Olympic medallist track cyclist Aaron Gate, along with local sporting heroes Black Sticks women’s hockey team captain, Anita Punt, and Nelson Giants basketballer Sam Dempster, joined in the fun by congratulating the kids and handing out medals at

the finish line. The organisation of the event was a winner also, with plenty of marshals on hand ensuring the day ran smoothly for both kids and parents. The event, which is in its 23rd year, is all about encouraging kids to get active in a fun environment, and is the world’s largest triathlon series for under 16s as certified by the International Triathlon Union. It continues to be a rite-of-passage for many kids across our region.

The Stoke Bowling Club Men's Div 1 team were winners at the Interclub 7's 5 zone regional club final held in Nelson last weekend. The other clubs represented were Blenheim, Belfast, Westport RS and Blaketown. The team will now go on to compete for the National title in Palmerston North on March 21 and 22. Members of the winning 7s team are, from left; manager Peter Hodson, Shannon Mcllroy, Jimmy Pugh, Lloyd Bellis, Paul Baken, Tom Closey, Chris Alldred and John Haddock.

Rugby League in neLson Rugby league in Nelson is on the rise, and with winter on the way the league season will soon be up and running for the region's six senior clubs. The Tasman area is home to the Richmond Rabbits, Wanderers Wolves, Wairau Taniwha, Stoke Cobras, Victory Phoenix and Tahunanui Tigers. These senior teams compete throughout the season for a place in the Tasman grand-final which was won last year by the Richmond

Rabbits. After only being in the competition for the last three years, the Rabbits have not only had a late entrance into the sport, but have come out strong, winning the final all three of those years. They will be looking to maintain their successful tally of victories this coming season, while 2014 runner-up team, Tahunanui Tigers, will be aiming to go that one step further and take the title. The end of the club season signals the start of the representative competition, in which the Tasman Titans represent Tasman Rugby League the best of the regions clubs.
